Study Matn Al-Ajurrumiyyah Online
Ustadh Abdus Shakur Brooks is starting a class in classical Arabic covering the famous text Al-Ajurrumiyyah written by the 8th century Hijri scholar, by the name of Ibn Ajurrum. This text is pretty much used universally as a primary study of Arabic grammar. It covers the necessary elements of the language one needs to know in order to understand Arabic sentence structures which is the key to sound comprehension for other religious sciences. This class will consist of a reading of the Arabic text with simultaneous English translation; commentary with equally be in English and Arabic. Focus will be given to understanding technical terms as they are understood in Arabic, rather than using their English equivalents; such an approach hinders the student from comprehending the full spectrum of Arabic grammatical terminology as the did the Grammarians who conceived of texts such as these.
All of the live classes will be recorded and downloadable for students. Students will also have access to an e-studentroom which will consist of a Q&A blog and other features allowing them direct contact with the teacher. A PDF. file of the text will be provided for all students, who do not possess a hardcopy.
To benefit from this class, students should have basic reading, writing and grammatical skills in the Arabic language. Basic grammatical skills include recognizing the difference between a basic verb “f’il” and a noun “ism” for example.
The ultimate aim of the class is to provide the students with the tools to help them understand classical Arabic texts comprehensively.
